Things I've Learned

You can't be a parent without picking up a few tricks along the way. Either you learn through trial and error or you learn to watch the parents who seem to be getting the results you want to see what you can pick up from them. What are some "tricks of the trade" you've developed?

Read to your children, even if you hate to read yourself. I read to my son every night. I was told that if I did he would grow up loving to read. Well, he didn't; BUT, he has a wonderful command of the English language and actually knows the meaning of words beyond two syllables! I read to my grandchildren every chance I get and they love it; and now my 9-year-old granddaughter loves to read. And in this high-tech world where children learn on computers at school and come home to TVs in every room at night (yes, that would be grandchildren), they need to know the value and the pleasure of reading.

I've learned just how important it is to "catch" your children being good. It's so easy to get caught up in that old trap of constantly telling your children how not to act, and it's so important to look for those moments when they're doing exactly what they're supposed to. It's obviously necessary to discipline children and let them know when they're doing something that's unacceptable, but it's also important to provide lots of encouragement and love. It's also so much more fun to interact with your children when you are able to do so with positive feedback instead of the usual constant nagging and disapproval. Most children are so in need of attention that they'll take all of the negative attention they can get if they see that they're not going to get it any other way.

Cary, you have to forgive me for this one, but I was looking up someone in Iowa and found the name of the town we can all send our kids to when they get out of hand - forget time-out! Just send them to Correctionville, IA! Don't you think this is worth checking out? Just sending them to Iowa might be enough - I know, I lived part of my life there. Okay, I'll crawl back into the hole I came out of.

You guys and gals need to know this because most of you are younger than me and have little kids. Well, I'm hear to tell ya that they never grow up and move away from Mom and Dad completely. My son is going to be 34 next month. He called me this weekend to ask me if I thought he should take my grandson, Austin, to get his foot x-rayed. He'd jumped from the top of the stairs to the bottom (about 6-8 feet) and the top of his foot hurt (how amazing!) - no swelling, he could move it. It just hurt when someone pressed on the top of it. My son called me while they were on the way to Austin's basketball game. Of course, Austin said he could play! Well, duh!!!! What did we say at 11 in situations like this? I advised my son that, yes, he should get the foot x-rayed because Austin is still growing and even if it was just a bruised or fractured bone, it could affect his future sports playing abilities and things like....walking? Your children will always need your reassurance, I can reassure you.

Do not buy Snoopy/Scooby Do fishing poles with little fishies on the end for those too young to fish OR tie the child to your body as he/she explores the great outdoors with his/her toy. They don't want to fish you see, they just want to see the fish drop into the water...and then leap in after the fish before you realize they have done so. If you must take the child fishing with this gadgetry, be sure the water on the bank is no deeper than the child is tall. And, remove your cell phone and wallet from your clothing before going anywhere near the water because they will end up drying in the sun later on, as will you.
